Basseterre, St Kitts Fly Cruise Holiday 2026/2027
Fly from Manchester or London Heathrow with Virgin Atlantic
Atlantic One Side, Caribbean the Other
Stand at Timothy Hill and you can see two oceans at once. To the east, the Atlantic runs deep blue and restless along St Kitts' windward coast. To the west, the Caribbean sits calm and turquoise. Two entirely different bodies of water, two entirely different moods, visible simultaneously from a single hill.
People who have stood there tend to go quiet. It is the kind of view that is genuinely breathtaking, humbling in the way that only the rarest natural spectacles manage to be. There is no photograph that does it justice and no description that fully prepares you. It belongs on any list of experiences worth crossing an ocean for, and it is visible from the train.
St Kitts ran on sugar for three centuries. The fields climbed from the shoreline up into the volcanic peaks. The narrow-gauge railway was built to carry the cane down to the mill in Basseterre, and it circled the entire island to do it. The mill has been silent for years. The railway still runs.
Today, the St Kitts Scenic Railway, the last of its kind in the Caribbean, takes you around the north-eastern coastline that sugar once owned: abandoned windmill chimneys rising from the cane, volcanic peaks coated in rainforest, small villages and steel bridges spanning deep rock canyons. It is one of the most unusual journeys in the region, through an island that has not tried to forget what it used to be.
Five Things That Make St Kitts So Sweet
The Last Sugar Railway
The only narrow-gauge tourist railway in the Caribbean. Three hours, open observation deck, complimentary drink, and the entire coastline, including the view from Timothy Hill.
The Gibraltar of the West Indies
Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched 800 feet above the Caribbean Sea. The French tried to take it in 1782. The English held it long enough that they gave it back. Its cannon-lined ramparts still look out across the water to the island of Nevis.
Where Two Seas Meet
Timothy Hill is the only place in the Caribbean where you can see the Atlantic and the Caribbean simultaneously from a single viewpoint. The difference in colour alone is worth the journey up.
Hamilton's Neighbour
Nevis, the small island visible across the Narrows from Cockleshell Bay, was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton - first Secretary of the US Treasury. On a clear day from St Kitts' southern tip, you can see almost the whole island.
Batik in the Shade of a 350-Year-Old Tree
Romney Manor, once the home of a relative of Thomas Jefferson, is now the home of Caribelle Batik, where artists work in the open using a tradition brought from Indonesia. In the grounds, a saman tree believed to be 350 years old provides the shade.

READY TO EXPLORE BASSETERRE, ST KITTS?
Board the Scenic Railway at Needsmust Station and the north-eastern coastline opens up; volcanic peaks, cane fields running to the sea, old windmill chimneys reclaimed by the forest. At Brimstone Hill, the fortress ramparts command both the Caribbean and the island of Nevis. At Timothy Hill, the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts sit side by side. St Kitts rewards the traveller who takes the long way round, and the long way round here happens to be by train.
