There's something special about setting sail. Whether it’s your first cruise or your 15th, there’s joy in planning the journey; choosing excursions, packing your case, and preparing for adventure. But while we’re good at ticking off the holiday checklist, there’s one bit of life admin many of us avoid: writing a will. It might not be the cheeriest of topics, but having a will in place offers real peace of mind both for you and your loved ones. It’s about knowing that, whatever happens, your wishes are clear and legally protected.
In the UK, more than half of adults don’t have a valid will. Yet it’s the only way to ensure your money, property, and possessions are passed on exactly as you intend. Without one, the law decides who inherits what, which might not reflect your wishes. Unmarried partners, stepchildren, or close friends, for instance, may end up with nothing. A will also allows you to: Name guardians for dependants, make specific gifts (like jewellery, collections, or a family home), leave money to charities, reduce the risk of family disputes, explore ways to reduce inheritance tax. In short, it puts you in control and eases the administrative burden on your family at an emotional time.
There’s more than one way to make a will, depending on your needs and budget. Here’s a rundown of the main approaches.
DIY will kits are available online and in shops, and they can work if your estate is very simple; for example, if you’re leaving everything to your spouse or children. However, DIY wills are easy to get wrong. Mistakes in wording or signing can make them legally invalid, and they’re not suitable for anything beyond the basics.
These services typically offer impersonalized templates you can fill out yourself. While they’re a low-cost option (some starting from £30), they don’t provide legal advice or tailor your will to your specific situation. This means they carry more risk, especially if your estate is anything other than straightforward.

Will writers, like ELM Legal Services, are specialists in will drafting. For the average person, they’re often a good middle ground between DIY and using a solicitor. Many operate independently or as part of national organisations, offering a more personalised service than online platforms. They are more affordable than solicitors but can still provide tailored advice and help you think through key decisions. When choosing a will writer, always make sure they’re a member of a recognised professional body such as the Institute of Professional Willwriters or The Society of Will Writers. These organisations have codes of practice and offer consumer protection.

Solicitors are legally qualified professionals who can handle even the most complex estates; for instance, if you own property overseas, have remarried, want to set up trusts, or have business assets. While this route tends to be the most expensive, it is ideal for anyone with complicated estate planning needs. A solicitor can also advise on tax implications, handle disputes, and ensure your will is water-tight. If your estate involves any potential complications or family disagreements, it’s worth the extra investment.
Many well-known UK charities offer free or discounted will writing via trusted professionals. In return, they hope you’ll consider leaving them a gift. It’s a lovely way to give something back, and a practical way to get your affairs in order. Organisations such as the Cinnamon Trust, Jessie May and the National Trust run popular schemes and we are proud to partner with several charities to offer free will writing solutions in exchange for leaving a minimum legacy.

Fantastic holiday on board Ambition
This was my third cruise with Ambassador aboard Ambition, and I loved every minute of it. The ship is fantastic, and every sailing has been a wonderful experience. What I enjoy most are the theatre productions and the guest speakers. The entertainment is absolutely outstanding. Having cruised with other lines, including Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises, I can honestly say that the shows on Ambition surpass them every time. The staff are always friendly, welcoming, and eager to help, creating a warm and enjoyable atmosphere throughout the ship. Their positive attitude plays a huge part in making every cruise feel like the perfect holiday.
I would happily sail with Ambassador again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for excellent entertainment, outstanding service, and a truly relaxing cruise experience.

Store it somewhere safe, and tell your executors where to find it.
If you die without a will, intestacy rules apply, and they may not reflect your wishes.
Having a will written isn’t just for someone who owns property or has savings.
Life changes, and so should your will. Experts recommend reviewing it every 3-5 years, or whenever something significant happens, like getting married, divorced, buying a new home, or welcoming new grandchildren.
Writing a will isn’t just a financial exercise, it’s a way to reflect your values and care for the people and causes that matter most. Whether that’s a grandchild’s education, a local charity, or passing on your beloved holiday home, your wishes deserve to be honoured. So while you’re enjoying the view from deck or planning your next port of call, consider taking a small step that makes a big difference back home. It’s never too early to plan well, and a will ensures your journey, and your legacy, ends on your terms.
