Sail on an unforgettable Arctic adventure aboard Ambition to capture the 2026 Solar Eclipse. This extraordinary voyage will have you in the remote waters off East Greenland, close to Ittoqqortoormiit, perfectly positioned to witness one of nature’s most awe inspiring spectacles.
On the day of the eclipse, take to the top deck where uninterrupted sea views create a natural amphitheatre beneath the Arctic sky as the ship is positioned in the perfect line with the centreline of the eclipse track. As the Moon gradually obscures the Sun, daylight softens and temperatures fall before totality reveals the Sun’s glowing corona suspended above the horizon. The sky darkens and stars and planets become visible, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere. At sea, far from artificial light and surrounded only by vast wilderness, the experience promises a rare clarity and sense of scale that few land based locations can rival.
August skies in this far northern latitude might also offer the chance to glimpse the delicate streaks of the Perseid meteor shower, while the darkened skies during totality may even reveal a fleeting glimpse of the aurora.
Joining the voyage is Pete Lawrence, a familiar face from the long-running BBC Sky at Night and a highly respected astrophotographer whose expertise in solar observation and eclipse imaging will bring added insight to the spectacle. He is accompanied by Peter Truman, an experienced lecturer and dedicated eclipse chaser who has travelled the globe to witness totality. Together they will share their knowledge through engaging talks, practical viewing guidance and expert commentary, enriching this rare celestial event at sea.
Pete and Peter will be on the top deck commenting on the experience during the eclipse and giving their analysis in the theatre during the meeting and Q&A.
CRUISE HIGHLIGHTS
Witness the Solar Eclipse
From the open top deck of Ambition, experience the Moon gradually moving across the Sun, dimming the Arctic daylight and casting a surreal twilight over the sea. As totality approaches, the Sun’s brilliant corona emerges, a luminous crown of plasma glowing against the darkened sky. The horizon stretches endlessly around you, creating a breathtaking 360? panorama where every moment of this rare celestial alignment can be savoured in complete clarity.
Perseid Meteor Shower
August skies over East Greenland offer the best possibility of glimpsing the sparkling trails of the Perseid meteor shower. As streaks of light shoot across the Arctic heavens, each meteor provides a fleeting reminder of the vastness of space. Far from artificial light, the ship’s decks offer an exceptional vantage point to watch these meteors arc across the night sky, complementing the eclipse experience with another spectacular display of natural wonder.
Aurora During Totality
During totality, the sudden darkness may reveal a fleeting display of the Aurora Borealis dancing along the Arctic horizon. Swirls of green, pink and purple can shimmer across the sky, creating a magical counterpoint to the eclipsed Sun. Witnessing this rare combination — the Sun’s corona above and auroral light around you — transforms the deck into a front row seat to one of the most extraordinary sky spectacles on Earth.
***Please note viewing of the solar eclipse, Perseid meteor shower and Aurora cannot be guaranteed and may be subject to local weather and atmospheric conditions.
