Pauline Daniels

Guest Act

Pauline served her time as a comedienne and has performed in every venue imaginable. Her many television appearances include, The Comedians, Saturday Royal and Wogan. But since 1986 Pauline has been hailed as one of Merseyside’s favourite theatrical daughters and one of the country’s finest actresses. Her first role was at the Liverpool Playhouse in “Chicago” as “Mama Morton” which was swiftly followed by “Rose” in “Gypsy”. Then followed many different roles including musical comedy and straight roles. In 1992 she became Willy Russell’s favourite “Shirley Valentine” and has continued to play “Shirley” all over the country.

Many other plays and productions too numerous to mention have taken place since but her toughest role to date was in “Unprotected” at the Everyman which went on to be an award winner at the Edinburgh Festival in 2006 and a Scouseology in 2007. Pauline co-presented with Roger Phillips for two years on Radio Merseyside and has sung many times with the Philharmonic Orchestra. She also plays a mean baddie in Panto and has been very successful as the Wicked Queen and Baroness Hardup at the Floral in New Brighton.

Pauline is Merseyside’s Queen of Comedy and continues to be one of Britain’s hardest working stand-up comics.

David Winpenny

Speaker

David Winpenny is an accredited lecturer for The Arts Society and has been a regular tour guide for Historic Houses Association Friends and other special-interest groups. His fascination with architectural and garden history has always encompassed the odder and quirkier aspects – his book ‘Up to a Point’ is about pyramids from the 17th to the 21st century in Britain and Ireland. He has recently added a talk on the history of Country House visiting to his portfolio. He is also interested in other matters - among his other talks are one on the tragedy of the first ascent of the Matterhorn, another on 19th-century scientist and eccentric Charles Piazzi Smyth, one on the history and music of British coronations and another on literary hoaxes. He has written guide books and books of walks for the AA, and has also written for the BBC Countryfile magazine. David graduated in English at the University of Birmingham and worked as a teacher and as a campaign co-ordinator and press officer for both central and local government. He now works as a writer and lecturer. He lives in Ripon in the North of England, where he is a Vice-President of the Civic Society and where he and his late wife Sheila founded a music competition for young people. David has been a contestant on BBC Radio's ‘Brain of Britain’ quiz and has twice taken part in BBC's Mastermind quiz, reaching the final in 1999.

Ralph Todd

Guest Speaker

RALPH TODD

Ornithology & Wildlife

Ralph Todd's lifelong passion for wildlife, particularly birdwatching, traces back to his childhood in Suffolk and flourished amid the greenery of London's Hyde Park and the Serpentine. In the 1970s and 80s, alongside his wife Brenda, Ralph played a pivotal role in establishing three RSPB Members' Groups and organizing birdwatching weekends across the UK. Following early retirement from the BBC World Service, they broadened their horizons, leading wildlife tours across Europe and contributing to conservation efforts worldwide, from Manatee research in Belize to advising on wildlife tourism in diverse locales like Ascension Island and the Danube Delta. Ralph's dedication to conservation extends to his voluntary work with various organizations, including serving on the National Council of RSPB and as a Trustee for Kent Wildlife Trust for 19 years. Currently residing in the London Borough of Bexley, he's immersed in documenting the area's wildlife history and is an avid follower of music, international athletics, and the (mis)fortunes of Ipswich Town football club.

ORCA

ORCA is one of the UK’s leading whale and dolphin conservation charities, dedicated to the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises around the world. Ocean Conservationists will be showcasing the incredible diversity of wildlife that can be spotted from the deck, helping everyone learn more about the marine environment around them whilst collecting vital data about whales, dolphins and porpoises to contribute to their protection. Whilst on board, the team will be delivering activities to help guests learn more about these amazing animals as well as the threats they face, including the Ambassador & ORCA pledge and the first ever cruise "Anti-whaling" campaign.

What to expect on this sailing... This entire route provides an abundance of cetacean activity! From monitoring minke whales and fin whales through the Irish sea, and resident populations of bottlenose dolphins around the UK.  The North Sea then provides an excellent monitoring opportunity in a marine protected area important for harbour porpoises.
