D-Day 80th Anniversary Voyage

Commemorate D-Day with a shorter sail around Britain’s south coast and France.

Ship: Ambition View 360° TourView 360° Tour
Departs From: Bristol Royal Portbury
Sets Sail: Jun 2, 2024
Duration: 6 nights
D-Day Anniversary
Cruise Code: A22411BR

Begin your voyage with a stop in Guernsey’s St. Peter Port that offers several museums and historical gardens as well as pretty beaches. You’ll then sail to Le Havre, the UNESCO listed city that was almost completely rebuilt after WWII when it was extensively bombed.

Before venturing to the subtropical St. Mary’s off the coast of Cornwall, we will anchor off the Normandy Beaches. Here you will have the opportunity to reflect on the significance of an operation that largely marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War. Thanks to Britain and its allies, D-Day is forever remembered.

CRUISE HIGHLIGHTS

St. Mary’s, Isles of Scilly, UK

The Scilly Isles are a subtropical paradise off the coast of Cornwall. Little more than six square miles, St. Mary’s is the largest, with an atmosphere unlike anything you’ll experience on the mainland.

St. Peter Port, Guernsey, UK

Quainter and more unspoilt than its near neighbour St. Helier, St. Peter Port is part Francophile fishing port, part bustling capital - and a playground for the wealthy, who know a good thing when they see it.

Normandy Beaches, France

On 6 June 1944, Britain and its allies commenced a highly coordinated invasion that sought to free France from German occupation. This invasion, known as D-Day, would largely mark the beginning of the end of WWII. Reflect on this fateful day as we anchor off the five Normandy beaches that troops landed on 80 years ago.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON BOARD

  • Special lunch menu (made with rationed items)
  • Themed vignettes
  • Great British Deck Party with special afternoon tea

Speakers & Acts

Nick Richardson - Help for Heroes Ambassador

Nick Richardson

Speaker

Help for Heroes Ambassador

Originally from the North East, Nick Richardson was a Logistics Officer in the Royal Navy. He joined the service in January 1989 and his career took him all around the globe. This included service in Hong Kong and the Middle East as well as operational both ashore and afloat roles in the most recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, working alongside the Army and the RAF.  He served in HMS SOUTHAMPTON during and after the September 11 event, with the ship extending its stay in the Arabian Gulf by five months in what was a very challenging operation.  While serving Nick also undertook a BA (Hons) degree in Defence Management and Technology as well as completing an MSc in Defence Acquisition Management, both courses included studying elements of the Cold War and the threat that the former USSR and the Warsaw Pact had upon the UK and its allies.

Nick has osteoarthritis from an ankle injury sustained in training early on in his career. A further injury led to other biomechanical issues that left him with a permanently damaged nerve in his pelvis and in constant, debilitating chronic neuropathic pain – something which cannot be cured or effectively controlled and can be extremely challenging to live with.  He does not remember his last pain free day.

After several years of treatment and rehab, it was clear that the injuries had developed into a chronic condition and he was medically discharged in December 2012. After discharge his condition continued to worsen and in 2013 Nick also developed neurological dissociative symptoms, which continue to affect him; when at their worst they make speech and walking very difficult. He also has a left sided weakness and a tremor which manifest when his pain spikes, when he’s fatigued or under great duress - Nick also suffers from analgesic migraine as a result of long term use of prescription opioid pain medications.  More recently, he was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, another chronic condition that causes further widespread pain, fatigue and “brain fog”.

Help for Heroes recovery staff have given Nick the tools to be able to enjoy life again. He was able to make good use of the large number of recovery activities that Help for Heroes and its Band of Brothers fellowship offered. This included the very first Shooting for Heroes recovery activity, a programme designed to introduce wounded Service Personnel and Veterans to opportunities in the country sports sector, as well as returning to a previously forgotten hobby, that of model making. In fact, this led to some of his models being featured in a London Exhibition as part of the Creative Force programme which showcased the role that creativity plays in recovery.  In addition, now sits on the Help for Heroes Beneficiary Advisory Panel, and is a member of the British Pain Society’s The Patient Voice Committee

Discussing the charity’s support, Nick says: “The one thing I would say to anyone who has contributed to Help for Heroes in any way is ‘thank you’.
“I believe that Help for Heroes has been central to raising awareness of the talent that exists amongst wounded Servicemen and women and Veterans. As an Ambassador, I simply wish to continue to showcase the work the Charity does.  While I now do not need to regularly ask for support, I know that the charity will continue to offer a wide range of services that I can access should I need to”

Le Grand Return

But how will they escape… and what will happen along the way?

Gerry Graham

Comedian

Fast, funny, observant and witty, Gerry was born into a showbiz family in South Yorkshire, he first performed on stage at the age of 7, and he was playing guitar in a local skiffle group two years later.  Since turning professional in 1974, he has entertained in jungles, aircraft hangars, been dropped off a helicopter in Northern Ireland to entertain the troops, travelled hundreds of thousands of miles to club and cabaret engagements, and appeared in just about every major theatre in the UK, including the London Palladium.  He’s worked with some amazing stars such as Johnny Ray, Helen Reddy and Howard Keel, been a ventriloquist dummy for Ray Alan, praised to the skies by Les Dawson, and sworn at by Sir Laurence Olivier!
