Scenic Shetland
Lerwick, Shetland Isles

by coach & on foot
The Shetland Islands, formerly known as Zetland, are a group of 15 inhabited islands about 80km (50 miles) northeast of Orkney, making them the northernmost part of the United Kingdom. The largest island is known as the ‘Mainland’ and has an area of around 967 sq. km (373 sq. miles). Lerwick has been the capital of Shetland since 1708.
Leaving Lerwick, your journey will take you to the Pictish Broch at Clickimin where a short stop will be made to see the broch tower in the distance. The Picts were tribal people who inhabited the eastern and northern parts of Scotland during the late Iron Age. Some of the fascinating brochs they built still stand, evidence of these ancient dwellings made of stone.
Rejoining your coach, you will continue with a drive through the village of Gulberwick and then head west through agricultural areas, passing the distinctive black and brown sheep grazing in pastures enclosed by neat dry-stone walls.
There will be a brief stop for you to photograph Shetland Ponies. This famous Scottish breed of small pony are distinctive by their heavy coats and short legs. They are native to the Shetland Isles and grow to around 1m (40in) high. After this photo opportunity, your route continues across the heather clad hills to Scalloway, an important fishing village on the western side of Shetland. The village is home to Scalloway Castle, a forbidding ruin dominating the surroundings. You will stop here to take in the surroundings, capture photos and learn about the castle’s rich history.
Rejoining your coach, you will head towards Tingwall Valley, an area of uninterrupted farmland views, small lochs and streams. Heading northwards through peat and heather landscapes, you will reach Weisdale Voe and visit the small workshop of Shetland Jewellery. Here, traditional Shetland gemstones are still crafted by hand in the Celtic and Norse-inspired fashions. You will have the opportunity to browse the shop or purchase a souvenir or gift if you desire.
Following your visit, you will rejoin your coach for the return journey to Lerwick.
