Inhabited by around 22,000 people, Shetland is a mosaic of islands Known for its abundance of wildlife. The location has been shaped by the constant battering of the sea and features dramatic sculptured cliffs and tranquil sandy bays. This experience will introduce you to the lifestyle of the people that have inhabited the area.

You will join your coach and travel south for approximately one-hour from Lerwick to Jarlshof, during which you may be fortunate to see some of the delightful and inquisitive Scottish breed of Shetland ponies. Once an important part of crofting life, they have been in Shetland since the Bronze Age.

Once at Jarlshof, you will learn about the people that inhabited Shetland from 2500 BCE up to the 17th century. One of the most remarkable archaeological sites ever excavated in the British Isles was uncovered in 1896 following a violent storm and reveals New Stone Age, Bronze, and Iron Age settlements, along with rectangular stone houses from an ancient Viking community. Your guide will tell you about the history of these village settlements, which are sprawled over a low green promontory by the sea.

Leaving Jarlshof, your journey continues to the small historic village of Hoswick where you will make a stop at the Hoswick Visitor Centre. Inside you can gain an understanding of the history and culture of Shetland from the exhibits on display. You can also enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and have some free time for souvenir shopping if you desire or just enjoy the scenery.

During your return journey to Lerwick, enjoy the Shetland views and see the small agricultural areas where sheep farming is managed. Distinctive black and brown Shetland sheep graze in pastures enclosed by neat dry-stone walls, and small crofting communities nestle on narrow peninsulas. Having gained a fascinating insight into Shetland, you will soon arrive back at Lerwick.
