Life of a Shetland Crofter
Lerwick, Shetland Isles

by coach & on foot
You will join your coach for an approximately 30-minute drive to Girlsta, home to the deepest loch in the Shetlands via the small pretty village of Gott.
Arriving at the Shetland Rural Croft Experience, you will see working sheep dog demonstrations, traditional Shetland sheep and the world-famous Shetland ponies. From beginner to expert, you’ll witness the trusted process the trainers take when it comes to herding sheep. In addition to this, you’ll be shown around the farm, or as locals call it “a croft”.
Crofting is a traditional form of small-scale farming or land management in Scotland, particularly in the Highlands and Islands. It involves small agricultural plots, typically used for livestock grazing or growing crops. Crofting plays a significant role in rural communities and helps preserve traditional farming practices. It's a fascinating part of Scotland's cultural heritage!
On leaving the croft, you will take a short drive to a local venue for some refreshments including traditional Lerwick Reestit Mutton and Tattie Soup. After savouring the local delicacies, you will head back to the ship in Lerwick.
