The English Riviera by Steam Train, Ferry & Coach
Plymouth

by coach, steam train, ferry & by foot
You will travel by coach to the seaside town of Paignton.
Here you will board a traditional steam train for a 30-minute ride to the riverside town of Kingswear. With whistles blowing and smoke puffing, you’ll be transported back in time as the train passes through the South Devon coastline at Torbay, past fine golden beaches, rocky cliffs and through rolling wooded valleys to emerge alongside the tranquil River Dart and its ever-widening estuary.
Leaving the train, you will walk the short distance to the ferry for the three-minute journey across the river. On the other side, you will visit the historic town of Dartmouth, with its royal naval connections, narrow streets, old houses, and lovely river promenade.
Here you will have some free time to maybe buy some refreshments or souvenirs or even try one of the local pubs to sample a typical lunch and English draft beer.
Re-joining your coach, you will take a pleasant scenic drive through the attractive Devon countryside and past historic Totnes, with its Norman castle.
Returning to Plymouth, watch for the Hoe - the historical part of Plymouth and catch a glimpse of the Barbican, famous for the Mayflower Steps Memorial. This is where the Pilgrim Fathers are believed to have finally left England onboard the Mayflower bound for North America. You will then return to your ship.
