This experience is ideally suited to those wishing to see some of the highlights of Portland’s surroundings, predominantly from the comfort of a coach.
Departing from the port, your journey will take you along the narrow causeway that links the Isle of Portland with the mainland. You will pass through the popular seaside resort of Weymouth, familiar to many with memories of traditional British family holidays. Your route then continues through the Dorset countryside passing through quaint villages and at times, enjoying views out over the English Channel.
Your destination is West Bay, a pretty harbour located on the ‘Jurassic Coast.’ The cliff exposures along the Dorset and East Devon coast are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will have some free time to take a stroll, perhaps to purchase some refreshments, or to take photos of the magnificent cliffs stretching along the coast. The cliffs contain millions of fossils that occasionally become visible as the rock is weathered by wind and rain.
Your return drive to Portland will take you along the coast road parallel to Chesil Beach which is at the centre of the Jurassic Coast. A final stop will be made at ‘The Heights’ on Portland to enjoy views long the coast before returning to the port.
