Spectacular Giant’s Causeway

Belfast

Spectacular Giant’s Causeway

by coach & on foot

Taking the inland road from the pier in Belfast to the magnificent Giant’s Causeway, you will travel through some of Northern Ireland’s most fantastic scenery. Your first stop will be a photo stop with a view of Dunluce Castle - now a ruined Medieval castle, the seat of Clan McDonnell. Be sure to have your cameras ready here! This castle is located on the edge of an incredible cliff perched above the Atlantic and built on a basalt outcrop.

You will then travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Giant’s Causeway, where for centuries visitors have marvelled at its majesty and mystery. The Giant’s Causeway is an area of around 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are some with four, five, seven or eight sides. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. During your visit, you will have some free time at the Causeway Visitor Centre before exploring on foot to the stone columns. Using audio guides provided, the story of myth versus reality will come to life as you embark on this journey surrounded by the breathtaking sights.

You will then return to Belfast via the North Antrim Coast Road. You will have the opportunity to discover the unrivalled seascape, towering cliffs and white sandy beaches as you make your way to Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge. Spanning a chasm around 88ft (27m) deep, the bridge construction once consisted of a single rope handrail and widely spaced slats where fishermen would traverse across with salmon caught off the island. A stop will be made for you to photograph the famous bridge from the vantage point high above at Portaneevey. From Ballycastle, you will turn inland to return to Belfast Port and your awaiting ship.
