Countryside of Eysturoy
Klaksvik

by coach & on foot
Towering above the entrance to the harbour of Klaksvik is the pyramid mountain on the impressive island of Kunoy. Surrounding the bay and harbour, you will see dwellings beautifully spread out on the hillsides.
Your experience starts with a journey through the 6.2km (4 mile) long tunnel 150m (492ft) under the sea between Klaksvik and Leirvik on the island of Eysturoy. Eysturoy is the second largest island in the Faroes and has stunning mountains, valleys and fjords.
Your destination is the village of Gota, a place of great importance in the history of the Faroe Islands. One of the key figures of this region called Trondur Gotuskegg (AD 945-1035) lived here. Trondur was a heathen Viking-chief who once ruled all the islands. He defended the old Viking ways against the desire of the Norwegian King and the Faroese chieftain, Sigmundu Brestisson, to convert the Faroese to Christianity.
Following this, a visit to the Blasastova Museum will give you an insight into the culture and way of life in the Faroes in past centuries. Your guide will provide you with an overview of the museum, along with some free time to explore independently.
Re-joining your coach, you will continue further south to Toftir, where you will visit a traditional ‘sheephouse’ to meet a local farmer who will tell you all about sheep farming, whilst being able see his flock up close with demonstrations. Here you will get a small taste of Faroese dry meat and be able to try some local rhubarb refreshments.
You will also visit Navia Yarn, a Faroese producer of woollen clothing, where modern designs are combined with age-old methods and traditions, lending each piece a unique character and the highest quality. The result is rewarding - both as comfortable clothing and original leisure wear.
Following your visit, you will drive back to Klaksvik and stop at the viewpoint overlooking the city before returning to the ship.
