Klaksvik Past & Present

Klaksvik

Klaksvik Past & Present

by coach & on foot

Klaksvik is the second largest town in the Faroe Islands with a population of approximately 5,000 inhabitants. It is one of the most important fishing ports on the islands.

Your first stop on this experience will visit the charming village of Árnafjørður which lies on the shores of a fjord as you emerge from one of the mountain tunnels. This village is part of the municipality of Klaksvik and here you will get a feel of village life. After your visit, you will head back to Klaksvik and the town’s viewpoint to appreciate the beautiful scenery and the high mountains sheltering the city.

You will stop for an outside visit to the magnificent church, Christianskirkjan. Built in 1963, it is an architectural spectacle to behold and is also the largest church in the Faroe Islands. The national sport of the Faroes is rowing in wooden boats. The Faroese boat has been used for fishing and now rowing and you will see examples of these boats as you stop at a local rowing club.

You continue with a short drive to visit ‘The Chemistry’, built as a draper´s shop in 1919. From 1932 until 1961, the building was used as a chemistry lab and has been kept as such, with bottles and chemistry tools. Next to ‘The Chemistry’ is a small but great exhibition of old Faroese tools, all in pristine condition.

Following your visit, you will re-join your coach for the short drive back to the pier.
