Ísafjörður Whale Watching
Isafjordur

by boat & on foot
Enjoy breathtaking views from the water as you take in the unique landscapes of Iceland’s Westfjords, while keeping watch for local wildlife in its pristine natural environment.
A short walk from the pier will bring you to the embarkation point for your whale-watching boat. Leaving Ísafjörður behind, the vessel sets sail toward the mouth of the fjord in search of seabirds and whales in their natural habitat. Seating is available indoors in case of inclement weather, though most guests choose to stand on the open deck to fully enjoy the sweeping views, raw nature, and fresh sea air.
Sailing along the striking coastline locally known as the Snæfjallaströnd — translated as the ‘Snow Mountain Coast’ — you will remain alert for signs of whales. In addition to these magnificent marine mammals, there is also a chance to spot seals and dolphins. Ísafjarðardjúp, and in particular the beautiful island of Vigur, is renowned for its rich birdlife. Keep your eyes open, as there is a strong chance of seeing puffins resting on the water; their bellies are often so full of fish that they appear to ‘walk on water’ as they attempt to take flight.
Whale watching is an exhilarating experience, and the knowledgeable crew will point out any wildlife sightings along the way. Humpback and minke whales are the most commonly encountered species in these waters.
While sightings can never be guaranteed, you will be exploring one of Iceland’s largest fjord systems, Ísafjarðardjúp — a spectacular region of sweeping inner fjords and dramatic mountain ranges.
