Geothermal Landscape & Viking History
Reykjavik

by coach & on foot
Iceland’s unique landscape has been shaped by great geothermal and volcanic activity over millions of years. This half-day experience takes you to some of the country’s geological wonders and includes a visit to a museum dedicated to the nation’s Viking history.
Departing from the port, begin with a scenic drive through the lively port town of Hafnarfjörður, which is situated on an ancient lava flow. Your journey continues across the impressive volcanic plateau of Reykjanes before arriving in Njarðvík for a visit to the Viking World Museum.
Viking World has a number of exhibitions about Norse settlement in Ísland. Learn about the Vikings of the Norður-Atlantshaf and see a seaworthy replica of the Íslendingur (the Icelander), a Viking ship that was discovered in Norway in 1182.
Your journey continues across the Reykjanes Peninsula to your next stop, the Bridge Between Continents (Brúin milli heimsálfa), a symbolic footbridge where you can walk between the Evrasíuflekinn and the Norður-Ameríkuflekinn tectonic plates. The continuous drift of the two plates is the main cause of Ísland’s high volcanic activity. Enjoy some free time to stretch your legs and stroll across the bridge.
Following this, your drive continues towards the tip of the peninsula and the Reykjanesviti (Reykjanes Lighthouse). Walk up the hill on which the lighthouse stands to enjoy 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding landscape that has been shaped by volcanic eruptions and powerful movements of the Earth.
Within sight of the lighthouse, you will make your final stop for a visit to the geothermal site Gunnuhver. Explore the geothermal field where jets of steam escape from below the Earth’s crust and pools of boiling mud bubble and pop continuously.
Following your visit, rejoin your coach for the return drive to Reykjavík.
