Iceland’s Scenic East

Seydisfjordur

Iceland’s Scenic East
  • Shopping time included

by coach & on foot

Departing from the pier, your journey will begin with a drive over the Fjarðarheiði mountain pass, where you will make a short stop at a viewpoint overlooking Seyðisfjörður, boasting one of the best natural harbours in the country.

From here, your journey continues to the town of Egilsstaðir, then alongside Iceland’s third largest lake, Lagarfljót. The lake’s bed lies 100m (328ft) below sea level, gouged out by the mighty force of glaciers that has occurred over thousands of years. The lake is famous for its mythical ‘monster’ that resides far below its inky depths, occasionally being ‘spotted’, attracting considerable attention.

Your next stop will be at Snæfellsstofa, the visitor centre for the area covering the east side of Vatnajökull National Park. Here you will have time to enjoy the interesting exhibition about the area and the surrounding nature and browse the gift shop for a souvenir of your visit.

During your visit, you may also like to take a stroll down to Skriðuklaustur, an unusual structure of basalt blocks with white cement and the former home of one of Iceland’s greatest writers, Gunnar Gunnarsson. Today, the building acts as a residence for artists and writers, both Icelandic and foreign.

Following this, you can relax and enjoy the scenery during the return drive to Seyðisfjörður.
