By RIB Boat to Saltstraumen

This exhilarating experience takes you by Rigid Inflatable Boat to experience the strongest tidal current in the world - the Saltstraumen.

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Bodø to Saltstraumen where your RIB will be waiting for you. Before boarding the boat, you will be provided with a thermal flotation suit and life jacket together and goggles. You will be briefed on safety and about the kind of adventure you can expect.

The Saltstraumen is a narrow strait that connects the Saltfjord to the large Skjerstadfjord between the islands of Straumøya and Knaplundsøya. At its narrowest point the strait is just 150m (492ft) wide. With wide bodies of water on both sides, the strait is a major bottleneck for the tidal water and every six hours, tides push or pull the water through the straight at an immense speed of up to 37kmph (23mph) at its strongest. The fast-flowing water creates some very distinctive whirlpools which constantly change shape and can be quite a shape. These whirlpools can be up to 10m (33ft) in diameter and 4 to 5m (13 to 16ft) deep.

This is a spectacular sight and a great photo opportunity. On your journey through the wild landscape there is a good chance you may spot sea eagles and see parts of the Caledonian Fold Belt; a range of mountains dating back over 250 million years.

You will return to Bodø and your awaiting ship by RIB.
