Geiranger Highlights
Geiranger, cruise Geirangerfjord

by coach & on foot
This experience showcases Geiranger’s highlights and surrounding scenic landscapes!
Departing from the tender pier, your coach will climb the slopes on which the village of Geiranger is situated, passing the octagonal wooden church, built in 1842, and the Hotel Union offering beautiful views down the Geirangerfjord to those who choose to stay here.
Admire the scenery of the Flydal Valley, as you ascend the mountain, pausing at Flydalsjuvet to enjoy views overlooking Geiranger and the fjord below. From here you continue further to Knuten where, off to the side of the new road upon which you are driving, you can see a section of the original Geiranger Road that opened in 1889. The name Knuten means ‘the knot’ and derives from the fact that the original route of the old road first passed under a bridge, then took a 270-degree turn to cross back over the top of the same bridge, providing a good insight into the engineering required to navigate the steep slopes.
Next, you will head back down towards Geiranger, stopping for a visit to the Norwegian Fjord Centre on the way. Take a seat in the cinema to enjoy a film of the area and have free time to explore the exhibitions and interactive stations giving you the opportunity to learn about the geological processes that formed the landscape of the fjords. You will also learn about the area’s biological diversity and how animals and plants have adapted to the various habitats. You may wish to browse the gift shop for a souvenir or purchase a refreshment from the café.
Re-joining your coach and returning to fjord level, your journey will take you past the pier and along the Eagle’s Road, the only road which links Geiranger to the outside world during winter months. Your driver will expertly navigate your coach around the eleven-hairpin bends taking you from fjord level to 620m (2030ft) above sea level. Pause at a spectacular vantage point, where you can enjoy views to Geiranger nestled amongst tall mountains at the head of the fjord, and in the other direction, down the impressive Geirangerfjord.
From here, your coach will wind its way back down the mountain to return to the pier.
