Departing the quayside, you begin with a drive through the city centre, where your guide will point out some of the key attractions along the way.

Arriving at the Museum of Reconstruction, you will embark on a journey through time, beginning with a brief exploration of the first Neolithic settlers, continuing through to the diverse ethnic groups that now call this region home.

The heart of the exhibition is dedicated to the poignant and empathetic retelling of stories relating to the forced evacuation in World War 2, and the devastating effects of the Nazi retreat in 1944. Learn about the challenging trials faced by Hammerfest’s resilient citizens during the following winter, as well as the subsequent reconstruction and rejuvenation of the town in the post war period.

Following this emotive visit, you will continue to the viewpoint at Mount Salen, where you will be able to appreciate views over the town, the fjord and the surrounding islands. Finally, return to your awaiting ship, pausing at the Meridian Column, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can learn of Hammerfest’s role in one of the biggest scientific endeavours in history – the measuring of the curvature of the earth.
