Atlantic Ocean Road & Bergtatt Marble Cave

Kristiansund

Atlantic Ocean Road & Bergtatt Marble Cave
  • Refreshments included

by coach, raft & on foot

This experience combines two of Kristiansund’s most popular attractions – the Bergtatt Marble Caves, and the Atlantic Ocean Road.

Your experience begins with a short drive through Kristiansund, a modern, attractive town built over three islands which are connected by a series of bridges. You will traverse the Krifast Road System, opened in 1992 as the first ferry-free connection to the mainland. The 25km (15 mile) long route includes the 5km (3.5 mile) long undersea Freifjord Tunnel and seven bridges. Among these are the Bergsøysund Pontoon Bridge and the Gjemnessund Suspension Bridge. Proceed to Eide where you’ll visit the old marble and lime quarries of Bergtatt.

Upon arrival at the Bergtatt Marble Caves, you will be met by a local guide and, after being equipped with helmets and life jackets, you will learn about the history of the caves, including their past as a quarry mine and how they have developed today. There is a movie presentation for you to watch as you enjoy tea or coffee and svele (traditional Norwegian pancake). Then board a wooden raft to glide on the crystal-clear waters through beautifully lit tunnels and caves. Appreciate the tranquillity of this underground world and even sample the fresh water directly from the cave walls.

After leaving Bergtatt, your coach will transport you to the famous Atlantic Ocean Road, a scenic 8.3km (5 mile) stretch of road. Built across several small islands and skerries, connected by causeways, viaducts and bridges, the road is classified as one of the most scenic Norwegian National Tourist Routes and an engineering marvel. There will be a short photo stop at a viewpoint before your journey back to Kristiansund via the Atlantic Ocean Tunnel, which runs between Averøy Island and Kristiansund at a maximum depth of 250m (820ft) below sea level.
