Discover Kristiansund on Foot
Kristiansund

by public ferry & on foot
Kristiansund is a small, yet charming town on Norway’s Atlantic Ocean Coast, built on 3 main islands surrounding a natural harbour. Once you’ve met your guide at the pier, join them on a guided walk through the traditional harbour called Vågen, passing the Statue of the Clipfish Woman and the old Trading house which these days houses a cafe and its own coffee roasting plant. You will see the Mellemverftet Wharf Museum with its veteran boats and wooden crafts undergoing repairs.
Continue with a short ride on the Sundbåten harbour ferry for a visit to The Norwegian Clipfish Museum, situated in the Old Mill Warehouse. The Sund-Boat is a pedestrian ferry with a long history. The first ferry was built in 1876 to transport people between the islands, and the service has been operating ever since - 150 years! It has become an icon for the town and is loved by the citizens as it is a practical, enjoyable mode of transportation within the inner town.
The salting and drying of cod was introduced to Norway and Kristiansund in 1690. Foreign merchants settled here, and the Norwegian clipfish industry became very important for the town, boosted by Kristiansund’s close proximity to the rich fishing grounds and the favourable climate for the air-drying of cod. The museum’s aim is to tell the story of this trade and the importance of clipfish, which is exported around the world.
After your insightful visit, you will once again board the Sund-Boat for the short journey back to harbour and your awaiting ship.
