Eidsfjord & Steam Boat Museum

This experience will give you the chance to see the scenic surroundings of Sortland and visit one of the most important highlights of the area - the old Hurtigruten (Coastal Express) boat MS Finnmarken, connected to the interesting shipping museum.

You'll set off from Sortland and travel south following the Vesteralen fjord, heading for the Eidsfjord (the herring fjord) where the traditional fiskebonde (fish farmers) used to dwell. Your guide will tell you about the fascinating story of the combined fishing and farming industry and about the herring oil factory.

You will then arrive at The Coastal Steamer Museum, (Hurtigrutemuseet), which opened in July 1999, located near the quay of Stokmarknes, the birthplace of the coastal express service. An overpass connects the museum with the MS Finnmarken, a preserved steamer built in 1956. The museum features pictures, photographs and memorabilia with records that go back to the 19th century explaining the coastal steamer's history and Northern Norway's maritime traditions up to the present day.

After approximately 1 hour at the museum, you will rejoin your coach for the return journey to Sortland.
