The Fishing Village of Nyksund

The Vesteralen archipelago is set amongst beautiful scenery and this experience will take you west to one of the largest islands - Langoya (Long Island). After passing through Jennestad, an old trading post, you’ll soon be able to see characteristic Mount Reka.

You’ll then head towards the west coast of the island to Myre, a busy fishing village, after which you’ll visit Nyksund village which is built on two islands connected by a stone breakwater 65m (213ft) long. Nyksund used to be one of the busiest villages in the Vesteralen archipelago at the beginning of the 20th century due to its proximity to the rich fishing grounds out at sea. However, with the arrival of engines and larger boats, Nyksund grew less and less important and its population dwindled until around 1970 when it became a ghost town. During the 1980s and the 1990s Nyksund saw a revival as young people from around Europe came to visit during the summer and started restoring the buildings. There are still only a few residents who live here all year round, but in the summer, it is visited by artists and tourists. A guide will show you how people manage to live in the north, and you’ll understand why Nyksund has once again come to life. You will then have free time in the village to enjoy the fantastic scenery and take some spectacular photos.

Finally, you will rejoin your coach for the delightful drive back to Sortland along the Lifjorden on the west side of Vesteralen.
