Scenic Sortland & Sami Cultural Experience
Sortland, Vesteralen Islands
by coach & on foot
This experience will show you what life is like for a traditional Sami family at the Inga Sami Siida.
The Sami are descendants of the nomadic people who inhabited northern Scandinavia for thousands of years. About 80,000 Sami people live across the four countries of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia with around half currently living in Northern Norway.
During this experience, you will visit a permanent Sami settlement and here you will not only learn about the traditional reindeer herding of the Sami people, but you will also be able to see and feed the reindeer. Sitting on wooden benches, covered in reindeer pelts, inside a wooden "lavvo" (Sami tent), you will learn about the Sami people and their way of life as you enjoy a hot drink. You'll hear fascinating stories about these indigenous people, and you will also be treated to some ‘yoiking’, traditional Sami chanting. The ‘yoik’ is more of a statement of the essence of things and events than actual singing.
After the visit you will enjoy a short scenic tour of Sortland's surroundings to admire the beautiful landscapes before you arrive back at the pier.
