Scenic Stavanger @ Ease

This experience is ideally suited to those wishing to see some of the highlights of Stavanger and its surroundings, predominantly from the comfort of a coach.

Set off on a drive towards Stavanger where you’ll see the cathedral, built in 1125. Of all the Norwegian churches created during the Middle Ages, this is the only one that has retained its original features. In front of the cathedral lies the colourful market square – the locals’ favourite meeting place.

Your drive continues along the harbour and across bridges to the islands of Engøy and Buøy. Nearly all the houses here have been built from wood and painted in bright colours, making it a sight to behold against the nature of the fjord.

Next, it´s time to visit the unforgettable Sverd I Fjell (Swords in Rock) monument, located just outside the city. The monument commemorates the Battle of Hafrsfjord that took place in the year 872, when the Viking King Harald Fairhair defeated the regional princes and united the 29 small kingdoms under one crown. Created by sculptor Fritz Røed, the three swords stand 10m (32ft) tall and symbolize peace, unity and freedom.

After a short photo stop, rejoin your coach and climb the hill to Ullandhaug Tower, a telecommunications tower which stands 135m (442ft) above sea level and offers marvellous views over Stavanger.

You will then take a short drive along the coast, passing the magnificent sandy stretches of Jæren, before making your way towards the old residential part of Stavanger, gazing out at fertile farmlands along the way. Proceed along Eiganes Road, with its postcard-pretty villas, and past Ledaal Manor - the King’s residence whenever he’s in town.

On your way back to the ship, make a short photo stop at Sola beach, where age-old wooden houses skirt narrow lanes. Your experience concludes with a drive back to Sandnes and your awaiting ship.
