Medieval Lüneburg Highlights & Christmas Market

Discover the highlights of Lüneburg, a charming medieval town situated on the River Ilmenau, south of Hamburg. Rich in tradition, it has over 1,000-years of history which is closely connected with salt, the ‘white gold’ of the Middle Ages. The salt mines made Lüneburg a rich and powerful town and an important member of the Hanseatic League.

Your experience will begin as you board your coach for the approximately 1h15min transfer to Lüneburg, passing some of the many sights in Hamburg along the way. Upon arriving to Lüneburg, your guide will lead you on a walk through the historic centre, sharing engaging anecdotes and insights along the way. You will stroll past well-preserved brick patrician houses built in the north Gothic style which highlights the prosperity of the city during the Middle Ages.

As your guided walk continues, you will make your way along small cobbled alleyways and see such buildings such as the historical Rathaus (Town Hall), which was built around 1240. Here you will stumble upon a true hidden secret, the local Christmas Market.

You will enjoy a guided orientation walk across the two main Christmas Markets of Lüneburg, one right in front of the Town Hall and the other one leading to the St. Johannis Church. Christmas lights show Lüneburg’s gabled houses and medieval churches to wonderful effect. Booths often decorated on Brothers Grimm fairytale themes, transform Lüneburg's pedestrian streets into a magical fairytale world.

You will have approximately 1h10min of free time to explore the Christmas markets or to further explore the main sites of Lüneburg at your own pace. You can choose to purchase some refreshments at one of the many café’s or restaurants or indulge in a spot of shopping to find that perfect Christmas gift.

The experience concludes as you rejoin your coach for the approximately 45-minute drive back to Hamburg.
