Hamburg & Neuengamme Concentration Camp

Kiel

Hamburg & Neuengamme Concentration Camp
  • Refreshments included

by coach & on foot

Your experience will begin as you depart from Kiel and drive for approximately 1h30min to Hamburg.

In Hamburg you will pass by some of the main highlights including the iconic Elb Philharmonic building and the UNESCO listed Speicherstadt (warehousing complex), which was built in Gothic redbrick architecture and housed fine spices, coffee and tea from all over the world. You will also pass by the Jewish Cemetery that dates back to the early 1600’s, as well as the site where the great synagogue stood until its destruction during World War II.

During a short stop at the Rathaus (Town Hall), your guide will talk to you about the Stumbling Block Project started in the mid 1990’s by the artist Gunther Demnig from Cologne, who has placed more than 100,000 of these blocks in cities throughout Germany and Europe to commemorate people who were persecuted by the Nazis. You will also enjoy a typical German snack including a Bratwurst and a drink at one of Hamburg's kiosks (fast-food stands).

Your journey will continue on to the former Concentration Camp Neuengamme which is situated outside Hamburg. The historical site commemorates over 100,000 people who were imprisoned in the largest concentration camp in the north-western part of Germany during World War II. Your guide will provide an introduction to the memorial and then you will be given approximately 1h30min of free time to explore the main exhibition independently.

The main exhibition is titled ‘Traces of History: Neuengamme Concentration Camp 1938–1945 and its Post-war History’, and this focuses on the history of Neuengamme Concentration Camp, its satellite camps and the fight for commemoration after the war.

After this moving visit you will reboard your coach and make your way back to Kiel and your ship.
