Nature’s Paradise-The Curonian Spit

During this stunning nature experience, you will explore the unique Curonian Spit. Legend has it that it was formed by the giantess Neringa when she poured a ribbon of sand to divide the sea from the lagoon to protect the fishermen.

This national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site extends into Russia’s exclave region of Kaliningrad and separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. From the port, you will travel by coach to the ferry terminal for the short crossing over the lagoon to the spit.

Your journey then takes you through the scenic landscape of sand dunes and thick green pine forests, hosting some of the world’s most abundant wildlife, along the old post road. On the Lithuanian side of the spit, there are four villages on the lagoon. Your first stop will be at the fishing village of Juodkrante, where amber was dredged from the lagoon from 1862 until the end of the 19th century. During your visit, you will visit the Weathervane Gallery and hear interesting stories about the special carvings that are attached to the old fishing boats.

Rejoining your coach, you will continue towards Nida. En route, you will make a stop at the High Dune, from where you will have breathtaking views of Nida, the lagoon, the Baltic Sea and dunes, as well as across the border to the Russian part of the spit. Once in Nida, you will enjoy a guided walk through the small streets, which feature uniquely styled and restored fishermen’s houses. You will then enjoy some free time for independent exploration, meeting at the City Hall before you rejoin your coach for the return journey back to the ferry for the crossing to Klaipeda and the port.
