Tastes & Flavours of Klaipeda on Foot

This guided walk will give you a real insight into Klaipeda’s history as well as beer and food tastings to provide a true flavour of this unique place.

Your guide will lead you from the pier along the promenade of the River Dange. The port of Klaipeda was situated on the riverside until the 19th century. The warehouses from former times are still here; however, they have been renovated and now serve as hotels and restaurants. You will see the old Teutonic Order Castle, a fortress from the 13th century, and pass over the old chain bridge, also known as the swing bridge. It is the only one in Lithuania, built in 1855 and still working today as a unique monument of technology. The bridge is still operated by hand, with two people rotating it to open the entrance approximately every thirty minutes.

After a walk of about 1.5km (1 mile), you will see the lovely three-mast sailing vessel called Meridianas in the old town, which has been turned into a unique restaurant. Built in 1948 in Finland, the vessel sailed the seas for twenty years as a training vessel for future sailors and captains.

Your walk continues to a historic restaurant where you will learn about the long-standing tradition of beer production in Lithuania. Here, you will be able to sample three different local beers, accompanied by tasty Lithuanian snacks such as fried bread and small cheese doughnuts. After the tasting, you will enjoy some free time for independent exploration before joining your guide for the walk back to the ship.
