Departing from the port, you will travel southward through the agricultural districts of Gotland, Sweden’s largest island and a province in the Baltic Sea. Your first stop will be a visit to one of the 92 medieval churches for which Gotland is famous.
Your journey will continue to Dalhem Parish and the Gotland Railway Museum based at Hesselby Station. Here you will board one of the rail carriages built between 1878 and 1945, for an approximately 35-minute heritage train journey to Roma. At Hesselby Station you may like to visit the very small exhibition of Gotland railway with trolleys, tickets, photos, uniforms and more on display.
Rejoining your coach, your next stop will be the walled city of Visby, nick-named ‘City of Roses and Ruins’. Visby is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best-preserved medieval city in Scandinavia. Here you will follow your guide on a walk through the cosy, cobblestoned alleyways filled with colourful houses. Visby is an outstanding example of a northern European walled Hanseatic town that has uniquely preserved its townscape and extremely valuable buildings. The town wall, dating from the 13th century, is almost 3.2km (2 miles) long and encircles old stone houses, churches and streets.
You will then rejoin your coach for the short drive back to the ship.
