Your guided walk begins at the quayside and heads towards Almedalen, the verdant, peaceful oasis in the centre of Visby, and site of the former Hanseatic harbour.
Your pleasant stroll will continue along Strandgatan, lined with beautiful medieval granaries, passing Kruttornet (the Powder Tower) before visiting the splendid Botanical Gardens, rich in exotic plants and bird life and known for its show of stunning roses and magnolias. You will also see the impressive Visby City Wall, which stretches for almost 3.2km (2 miles) and stands 11m (36ft) high. Today, 36 towers and three main gates remain along the wall.
Leaving the gardens behind, you will enter the Old Town to visit the impressive St. Mary’s Cathedral dating from 1255. Adorning the walls of the cathedral are several memorial plaques, notably one in remembrance of the Swedish passenger ship SS Hansa in 1944 by a Soviet submarine. Your walk will continue along the quaint cobblestone streets of the Old Town, passing by many historical buildings such as merchants’ homes and church ruins.
Your experience will conclude with some free time, and you may then choose to remain in the Old Town or make your way back to the ship with your guide.
