Ventspils & Radio Astronomy Centre
Ventspils

by bus & on foot
This experience explores some of the highlights of Ventspils, its scenic coastline, and the fascinating Radio Astronomy Centre in Irbene, with an optional tunnel exploration. Whether you are a history enthusiast, science lover, or nature adventurer, this experience offers something unique for everyone.
Your journey begins from the Ventspils Ferry Terminal, a bustling hub that connects the city to the world by sea. From here, you will enjoy a scenic drive along the Ostas Street promenade, offering a picturesque view of the Ventspils Castle, a landmark steeped in history. Along the promenade, you will also encounter an interesting exhibit from the CowParade, featuring a painted cow titled "Nomodu sapņi" by Latvian artist E. Patmalniece.
From Ventspils, your journey continues to Staldzene, known for its stunning Staldzene Cliff, one of the highest cliffs in Latvia, rising about 20 metres above the Baltic Sea. This breathtaking natural landmark offers a fantastic view of the coastline and surrounding landscape. After admiring the cliff, enjoy a leisurely walk along the beach, where the tranquil and relatively untouched coast provides a perfect escape into nature.
Next, you will travel towards Irbene, a place rich in scientific history and intrigue. The centrepiece of the area is the Radio Astronomy Centre, a fascinating former Soviet-era station that now serves as a hub for modern research. During your visit, you’ll learn about the large radio telescopes and their role in exploring outer space, studying the cosmos, and monitoring space missions. The main antena is a large radio telescope with a diameter of 32 metres.
As part of the programme, you will have the option to explore the underground tunnels that were once part of the Soviet military infrastructure. The tunnels offer a fascinating glimpse into the past and the important role Irbene played during the Cold War era. If you prefer to stay above ground, you can enjoy a scenic walk above the tunnels, experiencing the area’s natural beauty.
Following your visit you will rejoin your bus for the journey back to the port.
