Havana City Highlights
Havana

by coach & on foot
The history of Havana is truly fascinating. Diego Velazquez founded the city of Havana in 1514. However, the city changed location twice before occupying its current position on Cuba’s northern coast and becoming the island’s capital forty years after its founding. Havana has a long history of piracy, colonialism, two independence wars, a revolution, and a US trade embargo — all which shaped its character and culture such that you won’t soon forget your visit to this fascinating city. .
During this experience, you will explore some of Havana’s highlights. Your journey begins with a drive to a military fortress called Castillo de Los Tres Santos Reyes del Morro, where you will have a commanding view over the city.
Your journey continues with a drive through the city, passing landmarks such as the Presidential Palace, Central Park, the National Capitol, the El Floridita, the Malecon, and the University of Havana. You will also enjoy a brief stop at Revolution Square, home to the memorial of Jose Marti, the champion of Cuban independence.
You will then continue to Fusterlandia, a social art project located in a less touristic area on the western side of the city. Artist Jose Fuster created a unique and extensive public art exhibition with colourful and whimsical mosaics. Fusterlandia is a unique experience of art as a community project. You will take a walk with your guide to admire the sculptures and paintings depicting Cuban history, culture and identity, along with art influenced by other countries. The place feels like a huge playground of imagination and things to discover.
Rejoining your coach, you will return to the city centre, where a stop will be made at a local venue to enjoy a refreshing cocktail.
From here, you will follow your guide on a walking tour through the streets of Havana’s historic colonial district. The streets of Old Havana, the original walled nucleus of the city, were built by the Spanish between the 16th and the 19th centuries. The district was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
During your walk, you will pass important sites like the Plaza de Armas, the Castillo de la Real Fuerza (built in 1577), El Palacio del Segundo Cabo, the General Captain’s Palace, and the Ambos Mundos Hotel, which was once frequented by Ernest Hemingway. You will also see Havana’s first university, University San Geronimo de la Habana, as well as the Bodeguita del Medio. Your final stop will be a visit to Cathedral Square, one of the most elegant places in Havana surrounded by opulent mansions and buildings. Following your sightseeing, you will walk back to the port to conclude your tour.
