In the Footsteps of Hemingway

In 1940, American author Ernest Hemingway and his new wife Martha purchased a home outside Havana and soon became a fixture of the city over the next 20 years. The Hemingways named their home ‘Finca Vigia’, which translates as ‘lookout house’. The Hemingways shared their finca with dozens of their beloved cats, and it is here where the Nobel Prize-winning author worked on some of his most famous books including ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’.

Departing from the port, you begin with a drive to Finca Vigia. In the garden, the author's boat El Pilar can be found. This craft was the inspiration for the classic tale ‘The Old Man and the Sea’. You will be invited to admire the house from the grounds as your guide regales you with facts about Hemingway’s life in Cuba.

Following your visit to Finca Vigia, your journey continues to Cojimar, a fishing community where Hemingway used to moor his yacht. You will make a photo stop here before returning to Havana, where you will enjoy a cocktail at a local venue.

Fully refreshed, your guide will lead you on a walk through the streets of Havana’s Old Town, during which you will see Ambos Mundos Hotel and the famous bar of La Bodeguita del Medio, both frequented by Hemingway, completing your exploration of the great author’s footsteps in Cuba.
