Leaving the quayside, enjoy a short drive through the city, with your guide pointing out popular sites along the way. Head out of the city to see the historic El Morro Castle. The fort sits atop a 60 metre (200 feet) high promontory at the entrance to Santiago harbour and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
Next a short drive brings you to Loma de San Juan, where Theodore Roosevelt supposedly led a fearless cavalry charge against the Spanish on 1st July 1898. This was the site of the only land battle during the American-Spanish war.
Back in the city you will visit Parque Cespedes, located at the heart of Santiago de Cuba where you have some free time. You may wish to explore some of the local streets, or relax in a local restaurant and take in the hustle and bustle of daily life here. Alternatively, admire the historical buildings surrounding the plaza, including the Santiago de Cuba Cathedral. The city’s most important church is stunning, both inside and out. There have been various cathedrals on this site since the city’s beginning in the 1520s.
You then walk directly to the Cultural Centre, where you will learn to dance to fashionable Cuban Rhythms. Try your hand at one of the more popular Cuban dances - the cha cha cha, mambo, rumba or Cuban salsa.
During your approximate one-hour dance class, under the instruction of your teacher and a professional dancer you will acquire or improve your knowledge and skills in the main steps and styles of some of the most popular Cuban dances.
All too soon, it is time to return to your awaiting ship, eager to demonstrate your new skills to your fellow guests.
