During the early hours of 27 September 1957, the Atlantic Ocean began to boil, and the Capelinhos Volcano emerged from the sea, remaining active for thirteen months. This natural phenomenon expelled sand and ash, burying agricultural fields and destroying villages. During this fascinating experience, discover Capelinhos - one of the most remarkable volcanoes in the world and a significant part of the island’s history.

Departing from Horta on the east coast, enjoy the passing scenery as your journey takes the south road to the western point of the island of Faial. Here you will visit the Capelinhos Interpretation Centre. Inaugurated in 2008, this unique and modern architectural structure was built underground to preserve the surrounding landscape. During your visit, you will learn more about the volcanic eruption as well as the geological history of the Azores.

Next, you will return to Horta where a stop will be made at a local hotel for you to relax with refreshments of tea, coffee and a sweet treat, whilst enjoying breathtaking views over the bay.

Following this, rejoin your coach for the short transfer back to the port.
