Caldeira & Capelhinos Volcano Views
Horta

by coach & on foot
Faial is one of the central group of islands in the archipelago of the Azores and considered by some to be the prettiest. It is often referred to as the ‘Blue Island’, because of the abundance of colourful hydrangeas that grow around the edges of fields and along the sides of the roads.
Departing from the port, your scenic island drive will first take you to the belvedere at Espalamaca, from where there is a splendid view towards the port and the charming old town of Horta. On clear days, you may be able to see the islands of Pico, São Jorge and Graciosa, all part of the central group of the Azores.
Continue to the centre of Faial, ascending to 914m (3,000ft) above sea level, to view the vast volcanic crater known as Caldeira, over a mile in diameter and 366m (1,200ft) deep, surrounded by dense vegetation. Take a short walk through a dark tunnel to the viewing gallery or make your way up the steps to the viewpoint on the edge of the Caldeira to capture photos of the remarkable views. From the coach park, enjoy the views down to Horta on the coast, and across to the island of Pico.
Rejoining your coach, head westward, passing typical Azorean villages such as Ribeira Funda, Praia do Norte and Norte Pequeno. Your final stop will be to take in the views of Capelinhos, the now extinct volcano that rose from the sea in 1957. During the eruption, the volcano added a whole new part to the island, formed by the sedimentation of its ashes.
Finally, return to Horta following the coast along the island’s south road.
