Departing from the port, a scenic drive along the island’s south road will bring you to the Capelinhos Volcano, created during an eruption in 1957 that lasted for 13 months, destroying surrounding villages and smothering farmland in thick ash and sand.

This is where your coastal hike will begin, along a mostly unpaved coastal road. Pass by the ruins of ash-covered houses and the deserted former whaling port before reaching the new lighthouse, built to replace the one destroyed by the eruption.

There will be several opportunities to enjoy views of the Atlantic Ocean along the way. Finally, you will arrive at Varadouro, a former spa resort renowned for its natural swimming pools. Here, you will meet your coach for the transfer back to Horta.
