The Azores archipelago is visited by many species, including an abundance of whales and dolphins, making it one of the best places in the world to witness these marine mammals up close. Lookout huts, once used by whalers to spot animals, are now used by guides to direct whale watching boats to locations where the mammals are likely to be seen. Although sightings can never be guaranteed, there is a high percentage of success rate for whale watching tours in these waters.

A short walk from the pier will bring you to the embarkation point of the rigid inflatable boats (RIBs). Here you will be provided with a life jacket and a safety briefing before taking your seats and setting off across the open sea in search of dolphins and whales.

April to September is peak whale watching season in the Azores. Sperm whales are resident year-round, although most abundant in the summer months. Between April and June, fin, blue and sei whales migrate through the Azores on their way to their summer feeding grounds in the north Atlantic. Summer is the best time for spotting dolphins.
