A Glimpse of Sao Vicente

Cape Verde is an archipelago consisting of ten volcanic islands which lie between 600km (372 miles) and 850km (528 miles) west of Cap-Vert, the westernmost point of continental Africa. The archipelago was uninhabited until the 15th century when Portuguese explorers discovered and colonised the islands.

Departing from the port of Mindelo in the north, your journey will take you across the island to the east coast, where you will pause to take in views of the small volcanic peeks of Calhau and Vianna. A further stop will be made for photos at the white sand beach, Praia Grande.

Your journey continues to Baia das Gatas, a small village located on the north-eastern coast. The name literally translates as ‘Bay of the Cats’, referring to the catfish that once swam in the bay. Here you will enjoy a glass of ‘pontche’, a traditional liquor, or if you prefer, a cup of tea, coffee or juice at a local beach restaurant. There will also be a demonstration of ‘capoeira’, defined as an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music.

Rejoining your bus, you will cross the island towards Mindelo, making a detour up the winding roads on the slopes of Monte Verde, which is the highest peak on the island. Here you will enjoy views back to Baia das Gatas, of the black lava mountains, and of Mindelo and Porto Grande where your ship is docked. On a clear day, you may also catch a glimpse of neighbouring islands such as Santo Antao and Santa Luzia.

Before reaching the port, a stop will be made for an opportunity to purchase a souvenir of your visit to Mindelo and Sao Vicente.
