Explore Praia & UNESCO Cidade Velha

Santiago is the largest island in Cape Verde and home to the country’s capital – Praia. Santiago is an island rich in history, whilst also functioning as the main hub for inter-island transport across the country. Green valleys and lush plantations meet rugged mountains and bustling African towns.

Departing from the port in Praia, your journey will take you through the capital then west towards the coastal town of Cidade Velha. Your first stop will be for a visit to the Royal Fortress of Sao Filipe, located 120m (393ft) above sea level. Originally built to defend the city against pirate attacks, the fort provides you with wonderful views overlooking Cidade Velha and the south coast.

Rejoining your bus, you will descend into the town centre where you will begin a guided walk. The town of Ribeira Grande, renamed Cidade Velha in the late 18th century, was the first European colonial outpost in the tropics and has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2009. As you explore the cobbled lanes, learn how the settlement became an important trading post for slaves which led to it becoming the second richest city in the Portuguese realm.

Before rejoining the bus, enjoy a little free time to explore further at leisure, or perhaps purchase some refreshments.

Your journey then continues back to the centre of Praia where you will join your guide for a walk through the area known as ‘Plateau’. Plateau is the historical centre of the capital and was given its name as it is situated on a plateau 37m (121ft) above sea level. During your walk, you will see the Presidential Palace, the cathedral, the vegetable market and the statue of Diogo Gomes, who discovered the islands of Cape Verde in 1460.

Following your guided walk, rejoin your bus for the short transfer back to the port.
