A Castle of Aquitania

Bordeaux

A Castle of Aquitania

by coach & on foot

This experience is your chance to discover the famous charm of the Aquitania region. Relics from a great heritage, the historic Châteaux of the region tell the story of the past, legends and wars of the great men and women who played an important role in the region’s influence and prosperity.

Departing from the port by coach, an approximately one-hour journey from Bordeaux will bring you to one of two of the region’s historic, emblematic castles for a visit. Depending on the availability on the day, this may be the Château de Cazeneuve or the Château de Roquetaillade.

Château de Cazeneuve: The first Château on this site was built in the 11th century on a Gallo-Roman strongpoint. This castle remained the exclusive property of the Dukes of Albret and of the Kings of Navarre for four centuries. Today, the Château belongs to the d'Albret's descendants, the Sabran-Pontevès, an illustrious family from which five queens, two kings, two saints, and one pope are descended. The Château is furnished with periodic pieces. Your visit to the King's bedroom, Queen's bedroom, Queen Margot's drawing room, Louis XVI's bedroom and the medieval kitchen, will be a fantastic glimpse into the past.

Or

The equally spectacular Château de Roquetaillade is an old castle with an 11th century keep, 12th century quarters of the seigneurs, and an early 14th century fortified gateway guarding the castle entrance and is a living example of a perfectly preserved medieval castle. Roquetaillade owes its state of preservation to the fact that it has been owned and inhabited by the same Anglo-Gascon family for more than 600 years, the Viscounts of de Baritault du Carpia.

Following your visit to either Château, you will then rejoin your coach for the return journey to the port.
