Argostoli on Foot
Argostoli, Cephalonia

on foot
Discover Cephalonia’s capital city, Argostoli, during this relaxed guided walk encompassing history, architecture and island life. Its relatively compact nature, neat street layout and gentle hills mean it’s a great city to explore on foot.
Departing from the port, join your guide on a walk to the Kosmetatos Residence, one of the only buildings in Argostoli to survive a devastating earthquake in 1953. The elegant, neoclassical architecture reflects the town’s pre-quake character and is a testament to traditional Cephalonian architecture.
Continue to Argostoli’s vibrant central square, Vallianou, a popular meeting point for locals, particularly during the evening. Enter the peaceful Napier Garden, a leafy haven in the heart of the city. Named after Charles James Napier who served as governor of Cephalonia under the British rule in the early 19th century, this green oasis was originally created as a private play area for his children. Now the garden provides a serene escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, where, shaded by tall trees, your guide will share stories of the past.
Your stroll continues along the coastal promenade, lined with palm trees and colourful traditional fishing boats. As you pass the local fish and fruit markets, keep your eyes peeled for the loggerhead sea turtles who often approach the boats in the hope of getting some fish to eat.
Pause to enjoy a glass of beer or a soft drink, accompanied by some snacks, before continuing your walk to view one of Cephalonia’s most notable and historical landmarks – the stone, pedestrianised De Bosset Bridge. It is the longest stone bridge across the sea in Europe, measuring 690m (2264ft) in length, connecting Argostoli to the opposite coast.
During your return walk to the port, enjoy some free time along the pedestrianised Lithostroto, lined with cafes and shops, and a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. It’s the perfect spot to people-watch, or to pick up a souvenir of your trip before walking back to the port and your awaiting ship.
