Highlights of Corfu
Corfu

by bus & on foot
Experience the beauty, elegance and layered history of Corfu on this classic introduction to some of the island’s most iconic highlights.
Departing from the port by bus, enjoy the passing scenery as you make your way to the picturesque mountain village of Gastouri. Here you will visit the world-famous Achilleion Palace, built in 1891 for Empress Elisabeth of Austria and later acquired by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The palace is celebrated for its neoclassical architecture and lush, Italian-style gardens. Although the interior is currently closed for renovation work, the palace’s extensive gardens are still open to explore. Stroll with your guide among the Cypress trees, sculptures and sweeping terraces, and enjoy beautiful views over the surrounding coastline and countryside.
Continue to the viewpoint at Kanoni, one of the most photographed spots in Corfu. This vantage point offers magnificent views across the water to Pontikonisi or ‘Mouse Island’, and the whitewashed chapel of Vlacherna – a scene often used in postcard images of the island. According to legend, Pontikonisi was Odysseus’ ship that the god Poseidon turned to stone after it was washed up on the shore during a terrible storm.
Finally, you will return to Corfu Town for an approximately 30-minute guided walk of this UNESCO-listed jewel, which has been shaped by centuries of Venetian, French and British influences. Admire the commanding presence of the Old Fortress, before walking through the enchanting narrow lanes (kantounia) of the historic centre. You will discover elegant Liston Square, inspired by Parisian arcades, and view the neoclassical Royal Palace of St. George and St. Michael. Visit the 300-year old Church of St. Spyridon, the island’s most revered religious monument, before enjoying around one-hour of free time to further explore at your own pace or perhaps enjoy a coffee, watch the world go by or browse the local shops.
Following your free time, rejoin your bus for the short journey back to the port.
