Ancient Rhodes – A Crossroad of Religions

Rhodes is a diverse island, home to people who worship many different religions, reflecting the history of the island which has been ruled by different nations.

Departing from the port, your experience commences with a drive past Mandraki Harbour and on to your first stop at the ancient Acropolis of Ialysos. Here, your guide will lead you on a walk to view the Temple of Athena Polias and the Church of the Virgin Mary, erected by the Knights of St. John. During your stop here, you will also see the mighty 18m (59ft) high crucifix and enjoy panoramic views across the island.

Your journey continues back to the city of Rhodes where you will stop near the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Victory, known simply as ‘Santa Maria’ which you will be guided towards for a visit. Proceeding on foot, your guide will lead you on a walk through the medieval Old Town along narrow alleyways lined with ancient buildings rich in history.

Your next stop is for a visit to the Byzantine Church of St. Fanourios whose interior is adorned with wonderful frescoes. Following this, your walk will take you past the Mosque of Ibrahim Pasha which was built in the 16th century.

Your final stop will be for a visit to the Kahal Shalom Synagogue. Built in 1577, this is the oldest Jewish synagogue in Greece and the sole remaining synagogue on the island of Rhodes.

To conclude this experience, you will have the option to walk back to the port with your guide or remain in the city to explore further independently.
