Sicilian Wines on Mount Etna

This experience gives you a wonderful opportunity to sample the countryside, wines and local food of the Etna region and Sicily.

Departing the pier, enjoy a scenic drive to visit one of the famous estates of the Etna region and one of the premier wine producers, Villa San Michele. The estate is situated on the eastern slopes of Mt. Etna in the village of Santa Venerina at an altitude of approximately 500m (1640ft) above sea level. It is a family winery, and has been active since 1860.

Unlike the rest of Sicily which is generally drier and hotter, this area is characterised by a micro-climate of cold winters, temperate summers and abundant rain. The quality of the region's grapes is further enhanced by the lava soil, which is rich in potassium and mineral salts. The vineyards consist of an area of large terraces that cover approximately 26 hectares.

Arriving at the estate, admire the wonderful panoramas offered by the high elevation, where the magnificent Mt. Etna dominates the scene. You will be able to sample some of the Murgo families’ fine wines at an informative wine tasting, accompanied by some typical Sicilian snacks.

It is possible to make a purchase of wines from this distinguished winery before re-joining your coach for the return drive to Messina. On the return journey you’ll make a short photo stop at the 1992 lava flows.
