Noto – A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Syracuse, Sicily

Noto – A UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Shopping time included

by coach & on foot

This experience will take you to Noto, the second largest town in the Syracuse province and thought to be the best example of Sicilian Baroque architecture on the island. The town has antique origins founded at the time of Troy, on the Mendola Hill. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693 that struck the whole southwest of the island. However, Noto was rebuilt according to the town planning and architectural principles of the 18th century.

Leaving Syracuse, your drive to Noto will pass through small villages and almond groves.

On arrival, your walking experience will begin. The town is built on terraces which are connected by monumental flights of steps. You will cross the Public Gardens where it is possible to admire the busts of the artists who contributed to Noto’s urban culture and style.

You will visit the 18th century cathedral, an excellent example of Baroque architecture, restored after damage suffered during a earthquake in 1990 which later caused it to partially collapse in 1996.

Other impressive buildings in Noto include the churches of St. Domenico and of St. Charles del Colleggio; the Ducezio Palace which stands opposite the cathedral, and Villadorata Palace. They display a wonderful honey-coloured stonework. This residence was once home to Baron Giacomo Nicolaci, a local aristocrat. The palace has many striking features, most unusual are the theatrical figures hanging from the wrought iron balconies.
Noto has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, who also provided financial support for the reconstruction of some monuments after the earthquake. Noto is a pure treasure to behold, and the success of the Sicilian detective series Inspector Montalbano has brought much tourism to this part of the island.

Following your guided walk, enjoy some free time to explore independently before re-joining your coach for the return drive to Syracuse.
