UNESCO Tetouan
Tangier

by coach & on foot
The striking white city of Tetouan tumbles down the slopes of Djebel Dersa, overlooking the lush Oued Martil valley and framed by majestic mountains to the north and south.
Affectionately known as “the daughter of Granada,” Tetouan reflects a strong Hispanic influence in its architecture. The city was founded in the 15th century by Muslim refugees from Spain and later expanded under Spanish rule in the 20th century, creating a unique blend of Andalusian and Moroccan heritage.
Departing from the pier, enjoy the passing scenery during the approximately 90-minute drive to Tetouan. Along the way, you will travel through the fertile Oued Martil valley, passing small towns, mosques, and picturesque countryside.
Upon arrival, your guided walking tour begins at Bab el Okla, one of the city’s seven historic gates and among its most vibrant. Here, you will visit the Bab El Okla Ethnographic Museum, which offers insight into the region’s rich Islamic culture and traditions.
From here, continue on foot through one of Morocco’s best-preserved medinas, renowned for its intricate Islamic and Andalusian architectural details. In 1997, Tetouan’s medina was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its cultural significance.
Next, enjoy a photo stop outside the Royal Palace, built in 1988 on the former site of Feddan Park. Although still used occasionally by King Mohammed VI, the palace is not open to visitors, but its impressive exterior makes for a memorable sight.
You will then visit Bouhlal Palace, a beautifully restored venue that blends Andalusian and Moroccan design, with ornate carved wood and intricate plasterwork. Here, relax with a traditional mint tea while enjoying a local folkloric performance.
If time permits, you may have some free time to explore before rejoining your coach for the return journey to Tangier.
