Walk in the countryside and along hidden paths and discover the masterpiece that is an ancient irrigation system. Levadas are the island's ancient watercourses.

One of the best ways to see the interior of the island and to get to know Madeira a little better is to walk the footpaths alongside the unique and complex Madeiran irrigation system. These channels were dug by hand into the mountainside in the 19th century to carry water from high up in the mountains down to the fields and the villages below.

Leaving the port, you will transfer by coach or minibus to Vale Paraiso and one of the island’s famous Levadas to begin the first part of your walk. You will enjoy a gentle stroll, mostly on level ground to Camacha, 700m (2,296ft) above sea level where a stop will be made for a cup of tea, coffee or a soft drink.

Fully refreshed, you will embark on the second part of your walk to Rochao.

This experience of fresh air, peace and quiet, rural outbuildings, sun-dappled clearings, cultivated terraces and the sound of running water gives you a different perspective of this beautiful island.

At the end of your walking experience, you will return by coach or minibus to the port.
