Step into the tranquil world of Palheiro Gardens, one of Madeira’s most storied estates, where botany, heritage, and hospitality intertwine. Originally established in the early 19th century as a hunting lodge for the Count of Carvalhal, the estate was acquired by the Blandy family in 1885. Since then, generations of the Blandy family—renowned pioneers in Madeira’s wine and shipping industries—have nurtured and expanded these gardens into one of Europe’s most enchanting botanical havens.

Today, Palheiro Gardens is home to a rich collection of rare trees, exotic plants, and vibrant flowerbeds, including centuries-old camellias, towering African tulip trees, proteas, azaleas, and jacarandas. Of particular note is the herb garden, where fragrant plants such as mint, lemongrass, and lemon verbena grow—many of which are featured in the fresh herbal teas served at the Tea House. The garden experience will be supported by the gardens main ward who will share with you some delightful stories about the family heritage and floral history.
